This is _part_ of why you are, "The Best ISP On The Planet"

There's many other reasons, one of which for me was dealing with Linux early on.

I worked for an ISP and researched for a new ISP for about two years before choosing Sonic.

Our ISP didn't offer DSL.

Sadly the owner died and 1 and 1 picked it up, at that time the service went overly expensive and unfriendly in many unimaginable ways.

I found this message while trying to figure out why Usenet no longer seems to work on my AT&T DSL account. Now I'm in the market for a new ISP. Does sonic.net provide service in the SF Bay Area? I'm through with AT&T just as quickly as possible!

I'm a prospective customer doing some reading prior to getting new service. It is such a joy to find an ISP that doesn't go out of their way to harm their own customers. I read the Sonic TOS very closely and I'm all but swooning. What a contrast to, say, Comcast.

Things I like: a clear policy that Sonic does not retain records indefinitely (would be nice to know how long is maximum retention, but this is better than anyone else I've seen,) statement on wiretaps, Sonic does not claim IP rights to customer data, does not monitor customers on a regular basis, and generally acts as a common carrier. For features, I'm pleased to see eight (whoo!) static IP addresses and a shell account. The 91% rating on DSL reports is astonishingly great, too.

Clearly you follow the tech policy side very closely, understand the implications, and are able to articulate them to your customers as needed. I would *so* *much* rather pay you folks every month than companies that lobby for ways to make the Internet just another form of TV.

Unless my husband objects, I expect we'll be new customers in a few days. I am so relieved to find you folks.

This is a nasty reaction from people who don't completely understand how content distribution works.
----
Then again someone could use the sonic.net exclusive IPv6 tunneling service, and use the two free (several TB large) IPv6 news servers in Europe. ( http://www.sixxs.net/misc/coolstuff/ ). Neat, eh?

Thank you for posting this as it explains Usenet very well in terms an 'average' person can understand.

I hope to direct a number of people to it to read for themselves.

An informed public is often part of a better society.

Outstanding post, Dane! Your analysis explains the technical and legal issues of the DoJ's recent actions in plain language, and I hope our friends in the press pay attention to this story...

Usenet has always had these fundimental issues of providing for Free Speech, without allowing criminal activity, such as Child Pornograpy.
