Sonic.net Fusion Broadband

June 19, 2009 – 6:08 pm

upto30mbps2We are now serving five hundred customers on our fast new Fusion Broadband product. Adoption of this new standalone product is growing with customers who desire more speed or broadband service without a voice line (optional voice service is coming soon.)

Availability is limited but growing, we are up and running in twenty local areas today, including a reasonable portion of the Bay Area.  New coverage areas are scheduled to come up roughly every two weeks.

For more info on Fusion and to check availability, order or express interest in expansion, see the Fusion Broadband sales page.

  3. We do not have a coverage map at this time, please feel free to contact our sales department for specific location qualifications.

Dane has been keeping the “CEO” blog up to date with our expansion progress and plans.

  4. Who owns the remote terminal sites in Santa Rosa? Who paid for them to be built, the city or AT&T? How much does it cost Sonic – on average – for the equipment and installation for a remote terminal site? How many customers do you need to make that installation viable?

From what I’ve been told there’s been a problem getting access to remote terminal sites in Santa Rosa.

By David on Jul 9, 2009

  5. Outside plant equipment like remote terminals are owned by the carrier, not the municipality. Today both AT&T, Comcast and PG&E have equipment in the field in the Santa Rosa area for example. Any utility can deploy equipment.

Regarding problems with access deployment of remote terminals, it’s possible but there are some challenges. For example, cost, and backhaul. We’re working on these items.

As for costs and density required for deployment, that’s still details which are not fully quantified at this time.

We hope to have coverage to the Mountain View/Sunnyvale area within a year.

  8. Is Fusion phone service up and running yet for Sebastopol? And if so will it be bundled with the main fusion service or will there be a price increase and if so how much of one?

If the phone service is not bundled then is there a pay by year option?

    Thanks,
    ~AN

  9. Hello Arnold,

Fusion phone service is still in the testing stages. It will be available as a bundled service, but pricing has not been finalized.

  10. If I go with fusion voice, will I be able to keep my old phone number?

    By John V on Sep 2, 2009

  11. John,

Yes, when Fusion Voice is offered, you’ll have the option to move any existing number over to the service.

By dane on Sep 2, 2009

  12. Any estimate yet of when this will be available?
Another question: Since I assume this will be digital, will there be any noticeable time delay like there is with cell phones….something that drives me crazy. If so, is this just due mainly from ping times? I assume any delay will be minimal but am worried that if it is objectionable, I won’t easily be able to go back to my analog connection.

  13. Hey there John.

The voice service will be traditional POTS – line powered from the CO, no special equipment on your side, etc.

As for timing, we’re actually seeking test customers who are in the Santa Rosa market right now. If you’re currently on Fusion or want to get Fusion, and are Santa Rosa 01 (downtown) served, and you’d be willing to test voice with us, drop me an email, dane at-sonic.net.

  14. Yes I have fusion, and yes I am in Santa Rosa, and yes I would volunteer, but I am near the Los Alamos CO, not downtown. Bummer.

    By John V on Oct 13, 2009

  15. John, I’ll forward your info to our team, and we’ll see if they want to extend the beta to the SR11 CO.

  16. Hi Dane and Sonic.net staff!

Wow, this looks like a pretty cool product. Is there a rollout scheduled for San Francisco?

By Enoch on Nov 2, 2009

  17. Hi Enoch! We don’t have a scheduled rollout, however, Fusion is active in many parts of San Francisco already. You can either use our Fusion signup form to prequalify your address, or if you know the San Francisco CO closest to you, we’d be happy to tell you if we have Fusion there.

By adame on Nov 2, 2009

  18. Enoch,

Yes, all nine of the San Francisco COs are live today, and have been for about six months now. You can order service!

  22. Any chance service is coming to Pacifica soon?

By Sasha on Nov 7, 2009

  23. Come to Oakland! I see your billboard next to my house everyday when I drive past it (literally 5 blocks from my apt). I was hoping this meant you were close to finishing the rollout here. I can’t wait!

    Thanks for the great service.

By Sean on Nov 12, 2009

  24. Sasha, we do not currently have plans for construction in Pacifica, sorry.

Sean, Oakland is nearly complete, should be a month or two.
