Misconfigured public services including CHARGEN, DNS, NTP, SNMP, and SSDP are actively exploited in DoS amplification attacks. Many routers run these services by default and must be configured to block access or upgraded to properly secure them. When it is not possible to upgrade or secure the device, it must be replaced.
When your equipment is used to participate in a DoS attack you will experience degraded performance possibly rendering your internet acccess unusable.
This tool automatically tests the IP address your browser connects from. For most people with simple networks behind NAT this test is sufficient, if your network has multiple public IP addresses be sure to test them all.
It is very important that you secure your equipment. Where this
cannot be fixed with a configuration change a software update may
be available from your equipment manufacturer. Please contact them
for help if you did not receive the equipment from Sonic.net.
Alternately, you may find it easier to opt into our modem rental program and we'll send you a new, secure modem and wifi router. To opt in, either call support or log into the membertools. Please see the Sonic.net Forums for further information and assistance.
