Fri Jul 31 17:36:49 PDT 1998 — We have deployed cool new tools to allow users to more easily manage their accounts. These new member tools are available at the following URL:

sonic.sonic.net:443/

Features include the ability to add, remove and modify domain names, multihomes and email boxes instantly. Users who have their own domain names can edit email aliases for the domain so they can fully control how mail is handled on a per-domain basis. Users with multihomed websites can modify the subdirectory which the multihome points to. All customers can also change their personal information such as address and telephone number, and can also select how many months of service they’d like to pay for at a time, eg monthly, quarterly, etc. Please let us know if there are any additions to these tools which would make managing your Sonic account easier. -Brian, Devin and Co.

Fri Jul 31 16:02:52 PDT 1998 — Napa, San Rafael and South Bay backgraded from v.90 code. Because of problems some users were having connecting to our Livingston PM3 equipment in these POPs, we’ve moved from the beta ComOS release to the standard release. The main advantage of the beta was support for v.90. We’re awaiting a stable release from Livingston. Meanwhile, in these POPs, K56Flex is the only ’56k’ protocol available. -Dane

Wed Jul 15 15:19:04 PDT 1998 — We’ve ‘backgraded’ our news server to Inn 1.5.1 + security patches. The new Inn 2.0 server just wasn’t stable enough — we are going to run it in test mode on another host until we’re happy with it. -Scott

Mon Jul 13 09:53:16 PDT 1998 — News was offline this morning for a few minutes while we upgraded our news server software to Inn 2.0. The new version supports a ‘cyclical news file system’ (cnfs), which is specifically designed for news article storage (and increases performance tremendously). We’re hoping to have the cnfs online within a week or so.

Meanwhile, we’ve had some reports of the article numbers being reset in some newsgroups, a situation that we are investigating. One symptom of this is not seeing traffic in a newsgroup which is usually busy. The workaround: mark the newsgroup ‘unread’, which should reveal both old and new messages.

We apologize for the dust as we reinvigorate our news server. -Scott
